Politics and Archaeological Missions in Afghanistan: Japanese and International Research on Afghanistan and Iranian Plateau, University of Delaware, February 20-21, 2024

Under the auspices of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS, Washington DC.), we cordially invite you to register for and join the symposium “Politics and Archaeological Missions in Afghanistan: Japanese and International Research on Afghanistan and Iranian Plateau” on February 20 and 21, 2024.

Invited speakers are Mitch Allen, Warwick Ball, Pia Brancaccio, Henri-Paul Francfort, Deborah Klimburg-Salter, Rudolph Matthee, Lawrence Nees, Steven Sidebotham, and Gil Stein. Minoru Inaba serves as the chief convener, with Vimalin Rujivacharakul as the co-convener of the symposium.

The event is free and open to the public. Each registration includes a seat at the reception to welcome Ambassador Mikio Mori. An info session on JSPS scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships will follow the ambassador’s speech.

Hybrid Sessions: The symposium will include four hybrid sessions on the second day: 1) Presentations by Japanese researchers Iwai Shumpei, Satoshi Naiki, Ryochi Miyamoto, Chao-jung Ching, 2) Emerging Scholars discussing Afghanistan and Global Japan, 3) Regional Politics and Archaeological Missions, and 4) Roundtable on the transcontinental spread of Buddhism and Buddhist material culture

Transportation and Lodging: By train, the University of Delaware (on-campus Train Station, NRK) is 10 minutes from Wilmington, DE, 30 minutes from Philadelphia, 1.5 hours from New York City, and 2 hours from Washington DC. Visitors’ parking lots are available on campus. Campus shuttles are also available. Newark, DE, is a hub of food outlets and with three hotels on or near campus (Marriott-Courtyard, Hyatt Place, Marriott Spring Hill), in addition to a dozen more hotels in town. Those traveling by car can access the university via I-95, two exists: at the east entrance or south entrance.
